Mauricio Pochettino Reveals Why Tottenham Did Not Make Any Signings This Summer

MAURICIO POCHETTINO has admitted Tottenham are likely to make no signings before the window closes.

The north London side are the only club in the Premier League not to sign a player this summer.

Spurs fans were hoping for one or two late additions to bolster their squad for the coming campaign.

But at his press conference earlier this afternoon, Poch said: “I think it’s so difficult now because it’s only four hours until the end and I don’t have news now. It will be so difficult.

“Always, until you finish the game, you cannot say ‘now it’s the end of the game’.

“But in four hours it will be difficult to sign some players.”

Many Tottenham fans will be miffed the club have not strengthened their squad ahead of their first season at their new £850million stadium.

But Pochettino said: “I am happy to keep all the squad together. There have been many rumours during the summer about players out.

“I think the club made a massive effort to try to extend contracts with people like Harry Kane.

“He is one example but there are many examples too.”

Trying to justify their lack of business, he said: “I think the club is doing an amazing effort to try to finish the stadium as soon as possible and get the lodge finished at the training ground. It’s a massive effort from the club.

“Of course it’s difficult to understand for people in football that Tottenham didn’t sign or sell players.

“But sometimes in football you need to behave differently.

“If we are happy with our squad and cannot improve our squad, sometimes it’s better to keep our squad together.”

Tottenham finished third last year and performed well in the Champions League before Juventus knocked them out.

Their squad also impressed on the international stage, where NINE of their team featured in the semi-finals of the World Cup this summer.

Putting a positive spin on their lack of business he spoke of the strength he has in his current squad, he said: “We believe a lot in our players and there’s no point now to say why we cannot repeat a similar season like last year or the season before.

“We now have more experience with players who competed at a high level in the World Cup.”

Speaking of Huge Lloris, he said: “We have a captain who is the world champion, the one who lifted the trophy.

“That is I think a fantastic experience for him to translate to our team.

“Sure we are going to be in better shape, no doubt about that.”

Tottenham made a £25m offer for Aston Villa’s England Under-21 star Jack Grealish, but Aston Villa stood firm on their refusal to sell at any price.

But when asked if this move would happen, Poch said: “You know I don’t like to talk about players in another team.

“There are many rumours during the transfer window,  I think there’s no point talking about players that are in another club.”

He continued to defend the clubs stance and said:  “I am happy with the squad I have and I am happy with the players.

“I think always it’s to be right in your judgement  and of course working hard to try to improve your squad.

“But when it’s not possible it’s not possible and you have to move on and believe in the way we work and be competitive.

“I have no doubt that we are going to be competitive, with or without signings.”
