Liverpool Facing Champions League Group Of Death With Possible Real Madrid Reunion Due To Low Seeding

LIVERPOOL are facing the prospect of a Champions League group of death this season, due to their low seeding.

The Reds reached the final of Europe’s elite competition last season, losing 3-1 to Real Madrid and could have a quick reunion with the Spanish giants.

Despite that – and reaching the Premier League top four – Jurgen Klopp and Co could be set for a nightmare campaign.

Liverpool could find themselves in a group with Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Valencia in a worst-case scenario.

Whatever happens, the Reds will find themselves in either pot two or pot three of the four seeding groups.

After Basel crashed out of qualifying to PAOK on Wednesday night, Liverpool are now waiting on Benfica to learn their fate.

Provisional Champions League draw – Liverpool in pot three

Pot 1: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Man City, Juventus, PSG, Lokomotiv Moscow

Pot 2: Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Man United, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica, Napoli, Tottenham, Roma

Pot 3: LIVERPOOL, Dynamo Kiev, Schalke, Lyon, Monaco, RB Salzburg, CSKA Moscow, PSV

Pot 4: Valencia, Viktoria Plzen, Celtic, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Astana, Inter Milan, Hoffenheim

Should the Portuguese giants lose to Fenerbahce, Klopp and Co would be given a little bump – pushed into pot two.

However, should Benfica beat the Turkish side – with games played on August 7 and August 14 – they would take on Ajax or Standard Liege in the final qualifying stage.

A loss to either of those sides, again, would see Liverpool in pot two, while a Portuguese victory would see the Reds in pot three.

That would leave Klopp with the prospect of a horror draw, but thanks to the bonkers seeding system, they might be lucky after all.
