Protruding majestically out of the sea at 400 metres high, the limestone rock is shrouded in myths and legends, the most popular being that it’s the third most magnetic spot on earth – after the North Pole and Bermuda Triangle.
And while there’s no concrete evidence to support this, some say navigational instruments are often affected in waters surrounding Es Vedrà.
There’s also the popular belief that Es Vedrà was used to build the Pyramids in Egypt, as the limestone rock is claimed to hold a maximum concentration of enery, similar to that of the Pyramids, Stonehenge and Easter Island.
However, due to there being no traces of quarrying, it is plausible that legend came about because of the mysterious force that people feel surrounds the area, which has made it a favourite location for meditation.

Other legends are that it’s the home of the sirens and sea nymphs who tried to lure Ulysses from his ship in Homer’s Odyssey.
While others believe there to be a secret UFO base under Es Vedrà and that the rock is their gateway and navigation beacon.
A sighting known as Caso Manises claims on November 22, 1979, a flight between Mallorca and Tenerife was redirected to make an emergency landing after the pilot reported strange and rapid flashes of lights hitting his aircraft as he travelled over Es Vedrà.
He sent out an SOS signal and, as the air traffic controller was unable to identify the lights or objects, he was urged to change the flight path.

Reports of odd objects and circles of light emerging from the sea by local fishermen have only added to the belief that it’s a hub for aliens.
Another popular myth is that it is the tip of the sunken civilisation of Atlantis, mainly due to its proximity to the sandstone quarry of Sa Pedrera on the island which saw hippies flock to inhabit a cave there in the 1960s.
Celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Rita Ora, Alessandra Ambrosio, Victoria’s Secret model Elsa Hosk, Millie Mackintosh and actress Ruby Rose have all been snapped at the beauty spot, which has become a favourite destination to be photographed on social media this summer.
